Disclaimer: I've never actually listened to Mac like that (I'm more into Beck), so please forgive me if this review seems a bit uneducated.
Mac DeMarco's latest album "Here Comes the Cowboy" was okay. I enjoyed it a lot, but it was so boring that I almost fell asleep while listening. It felt like my mother was reading me a frickin' bedtime story. Lord. Now that that's out of the way, there were a lot of great things about it too. It has a soft, mellow tone to it that's great for chilling on a Sunday afternoon with nothing to do. Mac's voice was very soothing to the ears and the sound production was great. That's basically where all the praise ends. There's really not much to say about this album. It was very forgettable, practically none of the songs really stood out to me as a listener. Although his lyrics reminded me of Beck in a way, Mac's lyrics were a little too obscure. I couldn't make sense of literally anything he was saying. For God's sake, the first track consisted of Mac saying "Here comes the cowboy . . ." over and over again. A+ writing there, my boy. You may think I'm being a little too harsh with this review, but it's what I honestly felt about the record. It was too bland. Too boring. That doesn't mean it wasn't good, though. As I said before, it was still enjoyable and I found myself bobbing my head a little to "Finally Alone" and "Hey Cowgirl". This definitely wasn't his best album, but it wasn't the worst album in the world. That spot's reserved for Logic. Rating: 7/10

If I could use one word to describe Tyler's new album "Igor" it would be straight up wonderful. I loved it so much that I might just listen to it again before I go to bed tonight. It was that good. I genuinely don't have any words for the whole journey this album takes you on.
If you're listening for the first time, don't come into expecting a rap album or something like any of Tyler's other albums. Although he does rap a little bit on it, the majority of the album is dedicated to singing and sound design. While the rapper's singing is not always the best, the raw emotion makes up for it. It's like you can almost feel the emotions he felt while recording this album. This takes a very special talent and got me so overwhelmed and in my feelings that I almost felt compelled to cry. The sound design in this album was absolutely incredible. The beats fit the songs perfectly, the backing vocals were great, and did I tell you that I'm in love with this album? Seriously, I think I might have a problem. It may be worth mentioning that the entire thing was produced by Tyler himself. I may seem like the biggest Tyler fan in the world, but I'm really not. I've always thought he was cool, but never really sat down and listened to him like that. Boy, was I missing out. Anyways, the album was way better than I expected it to be. I think this may be his best album yet. 2019's been a good year for the rap community. Rating: 10/10 Just two weeks ago, Sir Robert Bryson Hall III released one of the most fire tracks I've heard all year, which (admittedly) got me mega excited for his upcoming album. Logic had collaborated with Eminem for his track 'Homicide' and together they gave one of the most brutal beatings to the mumble rap community I've seen for a while. I listened to it at least three times a day because it was that good. I was happy, the Rattpack was happy, the Stans were happy, everyone was happy. So I, in my infinite wisdom, decided to make a mental note to listen to the album as soon as it came out, ignoring the fact that Logic hasn't made a good album since 2015. The first two tracks were great (as I expected), but as I got deeper into the album, I found myself growing more and more confused.
“Is this supposed to be a joke?” I thought, mentally scolding myself for ignoring all the bad reviews and ratings. Now, Logic's never been an excellent lyricist, he'll never be up there with the likes of Eminem or Kendrick Lamar, but I expected something a bit better than: “Cocaine, cocaine, cocaine, cocaine, molly". A true lyrical genius, Bobby is. At least two-thirds of the album was exactly like this. He showed no signs of lyrical growth and spent the entire album rapping about his immense wealth, how much he hates his mom, and then had the nerve to just slide in a track about following your own path and not being afraid to be different, oh and also, I'm richer than you. What happened to the peace, love, and positivity? Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that there wasn't anything good about the album. The beats were pretty dope, and there were some good songs on there like 'Confessions of a Dangerous Mind', 'Homicide', and 'Still Ballin'', but that's pretty much where the praise ends. Logic, you are a lot better and less corny than this. Despite this, I'll probably still listen to Logic religiously, anxiously awaiting his next album. He's always been cringy, but good Lord, I didn't expect him to be this corny. I think I'll just flush my ears out with Under Pressure. Overall, it wasn't a very good album and I probably wouldn't listen to it again. Rating: 3/10 |
